Recent Studies Show Increased Risk for Heart Disease After Testosterone Therapy

According to a study conducted by the National Institute of Health (published Jan. 2014), there is a clear link between heart attacks and testosterone therapy. Researchers evaluated the health records of over 50,000 men who had taken testosterone treatments between 2008 and 2010. They were able to conclude that:

  • Men who were under the age of 65 years old and had a history of heart disease were 3x more likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke after taking testosterone therapy.
  • Men who were over the age of 65 were two times as likely to suffer a heart attack or strike as a result of testosterone therapy, even without any previous history of heart disease.

Another study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (Nov. 2013) found that men had a 30% increase risk of heart attack, stroke, or even death after taking testosterone therapy.

Common Injuries Associated With Low Testosterone Therapy

Many men are reporting serious side effects and injuries as a direct result of taking testosterone therapy drugs. Some of the most common injuries include:

  • Stroke
  • Heart attacks
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Blood clotting and anemia
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Death

FDA Investigating Low Testosterone Therapy

After the above two studies were published, the FDA took action and announced that it was investigating low testosterone therapy and its’ relation to the increased risk for heart attacks, stroke, chest pains, and other cardiovascular injuries.

The FDA immediately issued a safety alert and stated they would be reevaluating the safety of low testosterone products due to the sudden increase in cardiovascular side effects among men taking these products.

  • Testim
  • Androderm
  • Axiron
  • Bio-T-Gel
  • Delatestryl
  • Dep-Testosterone
  • Fortesta
  • Striant
  • Testopel

Report: Testosterone Therapy Products Are Being Overprescribed

The FDA has only approved testosterone therapy for men that have been clinically diagnosed with a low testosterone condition, called hypogonadism. However, the National Institute of Health study found that only one-quarter of the men in the study actually had a medical condition to justify a prescription for testosterone therapy. If you were given a testosterone prescription for one of these products but were not diagnosed with hypogonadism, you may have a claim for compensation.
